Now You’re a Squarespace Customer

In June 2023, Squarespace announced it would be purchasing domain registrations from Google Domains. Now that the sale has gone through, if you purchased a domain through Google, you’re probably left with a few pretty big questions. Both Google and Squarespace have put out tons of information to comb through, which can be a tall order, so I did it for you. I also spoke with a Squarespace agent on behalf of a client who’s going through this now, so I want to share any pertinent information with you in an easy-to-understand lil’ bundle.

Google Domains Migrating to Squarespace

Migrating all of the domains registered through Google Domains is going to take months. Once your domain moves over, you will receive an email from Squarespace letting you know. It’s important to note that the email address they will use to notify you is the one you used to purchase the domain, so be sure you have that login handy and are checking it regularly. The email should include step-by-step instructions on how to create an account with Squarespace if you don’t have one already. If you already have an account with Squarespace, once your domain moves over to them, you’ll be able to manage it through that account.

Domain Renewal Emails

If your domain is set to renew soon, you’ll be inundated with emails. For instance, one of our clients has hosting through Bluehost and a Google domain, which is now with Squarespace. They didn’t know why Bluehost was emailing them and mentioning Squarespace since they’d purchased the domain through Google, so the email they received from Bluehost was confusing. Here’s the thing: your hosting provider may email you to remind you that your domain is set to expire in an effort to get you to move your domain over to them. This isn’t a scam but it is a smart sales tactic and I’ll give you my two cents on that shortly.

If Your Domain Moved to SquareSpace

If you’ve gotten an email from Squarespace letting you know that your domain has migrated to them, follow their instructions on setting up bill pay.

If Your Domain is Still with Google

If your domain is still hanging out with Google, pay your bill as you normally would and keep an eye out for that Squarespace email.

Will My Domain Stop Working?

As long as your domain bill is up-to-date, your registration and DNS delegation will not be affected by migrating to Squarespace. The only difference will be how you manage any additional services, if you choose to purchase them, through the Squarespace management dashboard.

Will My G Suite and Google Workspace Change?

Once your domain migrates to Squarespace, that’s where all Google Workspace services (this includes G Suite) will be managed. This means that Squarespace will manage both your billing and your Workspace subscription. Google has promised to work with Squarespace to make that change as easy as possible for their customers. If you’re reading this and have not purchased a domain through Google Domains, please note that this change won’t impact Google Workspace subscriptions that Google Workspace or other resellers bill.

What Happens to My Billing Data?

Your encrypted billing info will securely migrate to Squarespace’s PCI-compliant (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) payment processor wherever applicable. Tl;dr: you shouldn’t have to do anything but I’m a fan of double-checking.

Will My Billed Amount Change?

Squarespace will be honoring current Google Domains customers’ renewal prices for at least one year (12 months).

Can I Transfer My Domain?

In my opinion, Squarespace’s customer service is helpful and responsive. My personal preference, however, is to have one company managing the domain registration and hosting. For me, this makes it that much easier to manage billing and any customer service needs that may arise. We also compared our two favorite web hosting providers recently if you’d like to do a little compare and contrast.

If you decide you’d like to move your domain registration to another company instead of staying with Squarespace, Google Support has instructions on transferring your Google domain to another company

What Does This All Mean?

That’s a lot of information even though I broke it down A BUNCH. The main takeaways are:

  • If you purchased a domain through Google Domains, you are now a Squarespace customer.
  • Your domain will be migrated over to Squarespace in the coming months if it hasn’t been already.
  • When the domain moves over, Squarespace will notify you via the email attached to that domain.
  • If you want to transfer your email to somewhere other than Squarespace, you can.

If you have questions or would rather let us handle transferring your domain to a new company, email me at erin@greenivycreative.com. We’ll need your Google Domains login and the login for the company you’d like us to transfer your domain to next. That’s it!
